  • What is a registered investment advisor? Are you a registered investment advisor?
A registered investment advisor (RIA) is a company or individual that provides financial advice to its clients and is registered with a regulatory authority, either the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) or state securities administrators. All RIAs can be looked up on the SEC's Investment Advisor Public Disclosure (IAPD) website. You can find us on the IAPD website at https://www.adviserinfo.sec.gov/Firm/319437.
  • What does being an independent financial advisor mean? Why does it matter?
Split Creek Capital is committed to being independently owned and operated. We are not owned by nor are we a subsidiary of any larger financial institution. We have no obligations to any third party to buy, sell, or even market any particular products. We are also not bound by any special interests nor are we limited in the financial products that we can offer or recommend to you. Our independence ensures our clients have the opportunity to consider all possible options and the advice you receive from us will be objective and founded in doing what's best for you. This is important because many financial advisors are not independent and, as a result, they may be limited or obligated to offering only specific products to you. They may even be incentivized to place you in certain products. We feel such situations and limitations are a conflict of interest and do not serve the best interests of the client. Our commitment to independence is another demonstration of our commitment to our clients and how we will always put you and your interests first.
  • What is a fiduciary? Are you a fiduciary?
Yes, Split Creek Capital is a fiduciary. As a fiduciary, we are legally and ethically bound to act in the best interests of our clients. We put our clients' interests ahead of all else, including ahead of the company's and our own personal interests. This is important because not all financial institutions or financial advisors are fiduciaries. At Split Creek Capital, we always have our clients best interests at heart and we proudly serve as fiduciary to our clients.
  • What is a custodian? Are you a custodian?
No, Split Creek Capital is not a custodian. A custodian is a financial institution that holds and maintains client assets. It is an important consumer protection that the company or individual who manages your money does not also have custody of your money. This "custody rule" is intended to protect client funds from loss or misuse. At Split Creek Capital, we custody our clients' assets with Charles Schwab. You can learn more about the importance of the RIA-custodian relationship and some of the reasons for why we selected Schwab as our preferred custodial partner on the Schwab Advisor Services website: https://advisorservices.schwab.com/.
  • What are your fees? How much will I pay?
We charge fees based on the services being provided. For the most part, we actively manage our clients' portfolios and charge fees as a percentage of assets under management (AUM). For clients whose situations are not well suited for asset management strategies, we charge a flat or per hour fee for consulting or advisory services. We believe in transparency and will always disclose our fees upfront, so you know exactly what you are paying and how we are compensated.
  • How often will we meet? How will you keep me informed?
This is really up to you. In our experience, many clients prefer to meet more often early in the relationship and over time choose to meet or touch base only as needed. As part of the Discovery phase of our process, we learn about you and your needs, including your communication preferences. We also learn and adapt to your preferences over time as we get to know you better. At a minimum, we recommend sitting down once a year. You will also receive a monthly or quarterly statement directly from your custodian, as well as a personalized quarterly review from us. Your quarterly review will include holdings, transactions, gains/losses, performance against benchmark, and invoicing information. We will also proactively reach out to you when there are investment opportunities that we believe you may be interested in or that may be suitable to help you meet your financial goals.
  • I already have an advisor. Why should I bother switching? That's so much work!
You're right, changing financial advisors can be a big decision and a lot of work. In our experience, it's a decision and conversation that many people want to or even choose to avoid because the process to do it can be so burdensome. If you decide to come to Split Creek Capital, we make it easy. We'll walk you through the process and gather the necessary information and documentation upfront. We'll then do the heavy lifting, so you can focus on what matters to you. The relationship between you and your financial advisor is a personal one, and it's important to choose someone you trust and feel comfortable with. Whether you decide to change financial advisors is a choice that only you can make. At Split Creek Capital, we don't believe in hard-selling or pressuring our prospects or clients, and it is against our moral code to sell anyone on anything that we do not believe is right for them. If you're already with an advisor and you feel they're the right and best partner for you, then they probably are. However, if you're on our website and reading this FAQ because you're with an advisor and want to know if there might be a better option out there for you, then we encourage you to contact us to learn more about Split Creek Capital. We would be delighted to learn more about you and share how we can help you achieve your financial goals.
